  Children need to understand the nuances of their mistakes but will have to rely on guesswork for social rules and the ways they've hurt feelings if you shut them down in this manner. They deserve the opportunity to discuss their actions and intentions and save themselves from misinterpretation rather than be painted 'naughty' to make an adult's life easier. It isn't backtalking; it's a conversation.
